Victoria Beckham A Style Evolution

by Michael Mulligan on December 2, 2011

Earlier this week Victoria Beckham, looked demure as she picked up the award for ‘Best Designer Brand’ at the 2011 British Fashion Awards. Anyone who has seen her collection knows she is entirely deserving, showcasing creative, edgy and elegant designs.

Previously we’ve known Victoria as being one fifth of the world’s most famous girl band, a failed solo-artist, and  footballers wife. Having been in the spotlight for nearly twenty years, she has become a style icon herself – but she hasn’t always been as effortlessly chic.

Victoria Beckham- Spice Girl

Spice Girl: As a newly famous spice girl in the mid 90′s, Victoria quickly established her love for designer clothes, earning herself the title ‘Posh Spice’. These early fashion choices are tacky and showy – but she was young and stage-ready outfits rarely add up to chic – she can be just about forgiven for these.

SOLO Here the 1999′s torn red leather mini-dress is awful, looking like a cheap half finished Halloween costume. Her second ensemble shows some promise as she moves away from her tacky 90′s look. In 2000, she had her first venture into the fashion industry modelling for Maria Grachvogel at London Fashion Week. 2001′s on-stage ensemble is terrible, ugliness of the outfit aside – you can the the look just isn’t ‘her’.

Footballers wife: Appearing in 2002, wearing a simple white suit, Victoria ruins the look with tacky shoes and a disastrous busy necklace. 2003 is when things start to look up: this outfit is much better, soft sexy and less try-hard. She keeps up the good work in 2004 with a classic blazer and jeans combo and with 2005′s revealing but beautiful gown.

Style Icon: This is when Victoria ups her game. 2006 onwards saw VB step towards a much more sophisticated image. It seems that she has grown up and found her fashion feet, taking on a much more elegant, lady-like look. Bravo!

Ever since she’s been keeping it simple and chic in classic shapes and elegant cuts. 2008 saw her looking very Audrey Hepburn (which is always a good thing).

2010 and 11 confirm that Victoria’s style is here to stay. Cementing her place as a style icon, her wardrobe revolves around classic staple pieces, and stylish accessories. Victoria’s fashion evolution proves that style doesn’t always come naturally at first. However, with some time, and good advice anyone can find the look that is right for them.

The Chanel Jacket

by Gabrielle on May 15, 2010

Beyonce Chanel Jacket

I bought my first Chanel Jacket in my 20′s. It is red, vintage and absolutely beautiful.  Top of my list for items every woman should have or aspire to have is a Chanel jacket. Here is my homage to a classic that has been going strong for over 80 years. Here is Beyonce showing how to wear it with shorts and Louboutin’s. I think that this is not chic but I love the jacket!

Kate Moss Chanel

Here is Kate Moss showing how to work the nautical look to perfection.

Lily Allen in Prada hat and Chanel Jacket looking sloppy.

As a stylist, this is Penelope Cruz showing how not to wear Chanel. She is not tall enough to carry this off, the jacket and skirt are both too long for her so she looks mumsy.

Victoria Beckham AW2010 1

This is a stunning collection and will sell out in days. Elegant, stylish, well cut and beautiful……..

Seeing clothes on the catwalk is one thing, seeing them on clients is another. Personal shopping with clients means you are confronted with poor fitting,  and odd sizing, sometimes clothes just don’t fit. Victoria Beckham’s first collection looked great, fitted well but the fabric was poor quality.

Victoria Beckham AW2010 2

The second collection was much better, more expensive fabrics, lovely peplum skirts and it was a sell out. Now look at this. Wow!!

Victoria Beckham AW2010 3

These are superbly cut, richly coloured and draped just pure magic………

Victoria Beckham AW2010 4

This is a superb dress that will suit short, tall, slim, or not so slim, wonderful, simple draping  and very flattering.

Victoria Beckham AW2010 5

Building on last seasons’ digital prints is this elegant Grecian inspired column dress. Well done Victoria you have learned, and silenced your critics. This is a great wearable, stylish, elegant collection that again will be a sell out. In short a stylists dream…………..  How amazing is she!!!

WHAT TO WEAR NOW-PERSONAL STYLIST CHOICE AW09

by Gabrielle on November 5, 2009

Dolce and Gabbanna AW09

Dolce and Gabbana aw09

When Personal Shopping all my clients want a dream dress. One, that makes your heart sing. One that makes you look thinner, taller, more beautiful…… This is it. The instore version has no belt and is sleeveless. It comes in rippling black silk, dusky rose with burgundy, or fuschia pink. Dolce and Gabbana dresses are a big favourite of mine lots of structure makes everyone look amazing!!

Paul and Joe

Pierre Cardin for Paul and Joe

The fashion pack at London Fashion Week were all wearing sequin jackets. Alexander Shulman Editor of Vogue wore silver over a blue T Shirt. This is the nicest version I have seen. Midnight blue and fitted- really gorgeous.

DKNY

DKNY

For Xmas at DKNY a spectacular sizzling red number. This is so easy to wear, skims over the tummy, cut slim at the sides for maximum flattery, slims, elongates  and its fun!!

Balmain AW09

Balmain AW09

This is my personal favourite of the Balmain dresses. Sensational cut, sensational colour and pricey!! Lots of copies around but this is undoubtably the best.

Burberry Prorsum AW09

Burberry Prorsum AW09

Yesterday I was walking down Sloane Street with a friend who was taking photos for Vogue. I have lost count of the number of people I have seen wearing this dress……or the snood with black jeans and black top……. or the boots which I personally hate!! Add it together=maximum chic. Also often spotted the mac with the pie crust collar in soft grey.

Victoria Beckham AW09

Victoria Beckham AW09

We should all support our own and Brit Victoria Beckham has created an instant sell out collection. Everyone bought dull grey but look at the burgundy, much more interesting!

Pinko AW09

PINKO AW09

From chic high street giant Pinko this low backed, tight Balmain inspired dress, affordable, wearable chic.

alexander Wang Aw09

Another clever dress, Grecian inspired one shouldered in plum that will suit Autumn women. Cut to hide unwanted bumps from Alexander Wang.

CELEBRITY WATCH:THE BURBERRY PRORSUM SHOW HIT OR MISS?

by Gabrielle on September 23, 2009

Burberry2 (2)

Leading Personal Stylist Gabrielle Teare  at Burberry Prorsum critiques Celebrity Style. Photographed by Darryl Vides Kennedy. Here is Emily Watson in Burberry, as their new face she stole the show and outclassed the fashionistas, simply stunning! HIT AND HOT!!

Burberry48 (2)

Jaquetta Wheeler chose Velvet!! Must have been reading my blog!! Velvet in regal royal purple looked amazing and accentuated her aristocratic face. Lovely!! HIT HIT.

Burberry30 (2)

Mary Kate Olsen dress needed a short chic jacket,  not this winter black coat, and the glasses are too heavy for her face, boots look wrong with the elegance of the dress and indeed the warm evening. MISS MISS.

Burberry28 (2)

Model Agyness Deyn in Burberry looked beautiful but just too like a 50’s housewife wearing a party frock. The pop socks look plain and awful, the brogue boots are too heavy for the dress. The jacket’s padded shoulders are Spring Summer defined but the colour clashes with the dress, as does the bag. Overall MISS MISS.

Burberry74 (2)

Liv Tyler wore a boyfriend jacket and short skirt and looked wonderful. Close up her luminous skin and just got out of bed hair made her utterly beautiful. And this is an amazing photograph from Darryl- well done!! HIT

Burberry4 (2)

Lee Na Young the Korean actress wore a 50’s style dress, but the  heavy winter too- warm wool coat made her look pear shaped and short. This look is not helped by sturdy boots which also shorten the leg. Leave this style to the naturally tall and leggy. MISS.

Burberry57 (2)

Jasmine Guiness looked chic, glamorous  and tall in a Chinese Nehru collar jacket over matching coloured dress. The colours beautifully celebrated her dark glossy hair. The black clutch and oversized pearl ring added elegance and feminity. HIT!!

Burberry35 (2)

Presenter Donna Air wore a bronze dress that looked as if it was made from a dish scourer!  The DULL DULL colour  did not suit her skin tone. The badly fitting skirt did not flatter as the A line was too wide, and  the boots killed the outfit. MISS MISS!!!! Come see Gabrielle Teare  Personal Stylist and learn the colours and shapes that suit you.

Burberry67 (2)

This is a very interesting choice of dress for Lady Victoria Hervey, the silver does not suit her skin tone. However she has gold thread in it and a stunning gold necklace which add warmth and allow her to literally shine. HIT HIT!! Next time choose gold, less effort and a better effect. This is the second time in two days she has worn gold and silver together.

Burberry6 (2)

The normally uber-chic Carine Roitfeld Editor of French Vogue has broken some major style rules here. Whilst being in fashion, the combination of deep V neckline and shoulder pads create a triangle effect and accentuate her rather pointed chin. MISS MISS! Needs a  Fashion Stylist!

Burberry5 (2)

Peter Mandleson, the Prince of Darkness trying to pretend that brown and beige go together and no one will notice this.  A large proportion of men are colour blind, but trust me women always notice.   Needs mens styling! MISS.

Burberry16 (2)

Alexa Chung in Burberry Prorsum looked amazing!! HIT HIT. Dress and Mac work, the colours compliment each other and her skin tone. Fabulous.

Burberry40 (2)

Anna Wintour is clearly having a gold moment since she has worn it every time I saw her this week!! However, it suits her skin tone and hair, the gold jewellery compliments and adds feminity. The sunglasses look wrong and slightly ridiculous, it was 7.30 in the evening and dark!! This is not Chic.

The only other person I have seen wearing sun glasses at night is Jack Nicholson and he looked equally ridiculous. However when he laughed and showed his  sexy vulpine teeth all the women just did not care. Funny that!!

MISS MISS MISS!  ANNA,  Purleese accessories should suit the occasion and that includes sunglasses.

Burberry85 (2)

I like Victoria Beckham she is an Aries like me and is warm, funny and often looks amazing. One of my favourite quotes, to Naomi Campbell when asked “Why do people call you posh? Victoria replied “Why do people call you beautiful? Love it!!

Victoria often looks fab and her clothes line is great as well. The first season the material was shoddy and I personally hated the zips running down to the hemline, made the dress so hard to put on. This season her collection looks great and is much better quality.

However, Victoria looks like an emaciated waif in this. Stick to body con and waisted tight numbers that suit the hourglass. MISS MISS

Burberry21 (2)

Freda Pinto wowed the jaded and tired Fashion week crowd in Burberry Prorsum. Shoes were to die for. Fantastic! HIT HIT

REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES

by Gabrielle on April 16, 2009

retro-2

As the Leading London Personal Stylist I have clients from all over the world,my clientele is mainly upmarket women. Are these women size zero? Absolutely not.

The most common body shape is hourglass and whatever their size my hourglass clients complain that fashion does not suit them. They are right.

I am a UK size 8 – US size 6, I have not bought a pair of trousers for 6 years, many of my clients are the same.  This is not a size thing but a shape thing. I have curves. Is fashion missing a trick? I refuse to wear hipster trousers. In fact, I refuse to wear anything that does not suit me.

If you have a waist, hipster trousers cut in at the wrong part of your body. However slim you are the result is a roll of flesh. Elegant? I think not.

Hipster skirts ride up and down as the hourglass has no defining flat area, so tops hang out and you are left with about 6 inches of spare material at the back, as the “too big” top will end up on the waist. This makes the skirt unflattering at best, and it looks like you are wearing someone else’s clothes, a much bigger someone. 2 sizes bigger in fact.

To overcome this fashion has designed lots of nifty tops that are either empire line, i.e. cut under the bosom or smock based, i.e. baggy. These were originally designed for preganat women. For the past two years my hourglass clients have all the same complaint. “I can’t wear trousers any more. Skirts no longer suit me, the tops don’t fit me and make me look pregnant.” Many like me refuse point blank to buy them and have very few clothes as a result. I am simply too style conscious to wear clothes that don’t suit or fit me.

I would like to reiterate that the majority of women have hourglass shapes.

So some style rules for the most desirable shape on the planet.

Wear fitted clothes.

Celebrate and exaggerate that great waist.

Refuse to buy hipster skirts and trousers look for high waisted styles.

Buy tops that are fitted and shaped to the waist.

Wear short fitted jackets.

Buy fitted shift dresses.

Choose pencil or slightly A line skirts.

Belt whenever you can.

Vivian Westwood, Roland Mouret, John Galliano, Dolce and Gabbana,

Karen Millen, Pinko, Tara Jamon,Thakoon, Victoria Beckham all make for the hourglass.
