SUMMER STYLE: The White Stripes!

by Michael Mulligan on May 17, 2012

Nautical and Breton stripes are a classic way to keep your style clean and chic this summer. Don’t think full on sailor suit, instead opt for well tailored simple pieces in simple stripes. These summery stripes are also a great way to incorporate this seasons trends for sporty details and crisp whites.

This zipper swimsuit by Lisa Marie Fernandez is great – it has that cool, sports chic feel. Team with these retro-inspired sunglasses for a glamorous pool-side look. Simple striped tunic dresses (like this one by Aubin & Wills) are a great investment – They’ll keep you stylish for summers to come.

A simple white summer dress is great for teaming with stripes, especially if you prefer bold patterns in smaller doses. Go for a pretty striped cardigan on the cooler days, or cinch in your waist with a sporty striped belt.

Interview with Yan To

by Michael Mulligan on May 14, 2012

Yan To 2 Interview with Yan To

A typical question for a designer, but what if anything inspires you the most?

‘I am inspired by my desire to present the female form in an empowering, sensual, intelligent way. I want my women to feel amazing when they wear one of my dresses.’

You famously work away from London, deep in the countryside, why?

‘I have young children who came about before I started my label. It would be deeply unfair to uproot them to the metropolis.’

Your pieces, and indeed collections are acknowledged for their innovation, particularly when working with elastic and body con. What is it that draws you to these materials?

‘I kind of stumbled onto working with elastics for my AW10. I was surprised that no-one had ever used it this way before so being the pragmatist that I am, I decided to see how far I could go with it as a material. Coincidently, there are a few elastic manufacturers very close by so I have access to some great materials and for SS13 they are helping me develop more luxe elastics. I believe that for a body-con dress to work, the woman should be able to wear the lingerie that befits her mood and not have to resort to control pants.’

yan to dress 352x600 Interview with Yan To

For you, what is the most important aspect of your work?

‘It needs to have a strong integrity. I am drawn to discovering new techniques. I also want to create work that is incredibly good value for money. Most of my work is hand finished and often pieces are unique in some way.’

Yan to ss 2012 Interview with Yan To

What were the influences behind your SS12 collection?

‘I wanted to capture the majesty of the English countryside as seen on numerous walks I went on during last summer.’

What do you define as ‘style’, do you consider anyone to be a style icon?

‘It’s a hard question. It’s like getting someone to define love. If I have to answer I would say that visual perception of a person is like a triangle. On one apex is in-consequence, on the second is WTF and on the third is style. I guess we all fit somewhere in the triangle? The difficult part is that everyone’s triangle is different, hence we go back to visual perception…’

‘As for style icons there are too many to mention but I thing Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel would definitely be near the top.’

What can we expect for AW13?

‘A far darker palette and a more structural collection. I am working on the idea of Seductive Armour.’

yan to ss 2102 2 Interview with Yan To

Yan To is a mysterious designer whose collections are universally praised as innovative, wearable and beautiful. Famous for his work with elastics, sumptuous textured surfaces and garments that aim to both embrace enhance a woman’s figure. His Spring/Summer collection is no exception. Sensual, summery mini-dresses are swathed and embellished in panels of woven fabric, alluding to the textural, three dimensional feel of his overall aesthetic. The pieces are varied too, some are classically simple in design, whilst others are framed by complex, contrasting details. Due to the nature of Yan To’s work, each garment is often without an exact replica; slight variations and details vary so when you wear one of his dresses you’re wearing something entirely unique. That is what I love about Yan To as a designer: talented, innovative and creative though he is, he has the eventual  wearer in mind – He wants women to look and feel amazing and really, what else are clothes for?

You can follow Yan To on twitter @byyanto and find his clothes stocked at Harrods, Layers, and Young British Designers.

Just like floral print, animal prints were given a dramatic update for this season. Variations on natural colours were prominent, clashed with other similar or contrasting graphic prints

Fabulous Florals Spring Summer 2012 Trend Alert

by Gabrielle on January 30, 2012

fabulous FLORALS ss2012 trend Fabulous Florals Spring Summer 2012 Trend Alert

Florals have been a firm staple trend (so you’ve probably got plenty in your wardrobe) for the past few years and SS12 saw them receive yet another chic update. These aren’t the standard floral prints you’re used to seeing. This seasons florals have a real depth and artistry to them and the great thing is there is something to suit everyone. Opt for full on vintage romance like Valentino and Alberta Ferretti with dusty pinks, sheer panels and intricate embroidery.

fabulous FLORALS ss2012 trend 2 Fabulous Florals Spring Summer 2012 Trend Alert

Some florals  take a thoroughly modern approach with pop-art perennials (like Christopher Kane and Rodarte) and bold graphic prints (like Alexander Wang, Matthew Williamson and Mary Katrantzou).

Tips for wearing SS12 Florals: – Try to choose the vintage inspired  or graphic printed florals. – For one on-trend look try clashing florals with an aquatic print or stripes. – For another, try floral prints in soft pastel colours. Here’s a small edition of Florals currently available:

Siren Song : Spring Summer 2012 Trends

Givenchy SS2012

The  theme of water appears to have been the canvas for the spring-summer 2012 parades. The mythical siren sang beguilingly to designers to lure them into creating homage to herself and the aquamarine and cerulean sea realm. The models came  wrapped in clothes in the colors of the seabed, rebrodées and shimmering scales at Givenchy  with its wetsuit-like feel to the collection.

Stella McCartney Ready To Wear?

Stella McCartney Catwalk Stella McCartney Ready To Wear?

When I first saw Stella McCartney Spring Summer 2012 I was intrigued by it’s casual, laid back and original approach. Although I’m usually a fan of Stella’s collections, I didn’t immediately take to the muted geometric prints edged with swirling baroque lace and embroidery– I had doubts about how wearable the collection was and how it would translate onto women away from the Parisian runway.

Gywneth Paltrow and Nicole Kidman in Stella McCartney 375x600 Stella McCartney Ready To Wear?

Stella McCartney herself wore a piece of the collection to British fashion awards this week where she won the red carpet award. Stella looks typically understated but in her light printed jumpsuit, but I can’t help feeling the look is a little too casual. The word ‘pyjamas’ springs to mind.

1920′s Trends

by Michael Mulligan on November 22, 2011

The 1920′s was a time of luxury, style and decadence. Keeping that in mind, it’s no wonder designers have re-incarnated  the flapper dress for their Spring/Summer 2012 collections. Shiny metallics, low dropped waists and fun, glitzy details like tassels, beading and fringing were the original party frocks for the girls who ditched their corsets and danced their cares away.

1920s trends 11 1920s Trends

From Marc Jacobs and Gucci to Ralph Lauren and Alberta Feretti, the Spring/Summer shows were laced with a definite nod to the decade. Soft, leisurely cuts in whites, pastels and delicate florals accompanied elegant hats clearly taking inspiration from the daywear of the era.

With celebrities like Diane Kruger and Camilla Belle already taking up the look and Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby due out net year, I predict this blossoming trend will only get bigger.

To Die For : Marchesa SS12

by Michael Mulligan on November 20, 2011

These three gowns by Marchesa are to die for. Clearly taking an inspiration from the Gilded Age, they are perfect for translating a slice of high society Edwardian glamour into modern day life. With sheer draping layers, floaty tiers of chiffon and intricate detailing, these dresses are bound to become red carpet favourites.

marchesa ss12 new To Die For : Marchesa SS12

Some industry insiders aren’t happy with Marchesa, who seem to produce only exquisite evening dresses every season. I can see their point, the brand can be repetitive and predictable whilst other designers are new and innovative season after season. On the flip side though, aren’t there enough designers to push boundaries and mix it up? These gowns may be predictable, but you can’t deny their beauty.

There is clearly room for everyone, here in the fashion industry. Whether it be the otherworldly artistry of Alexander McQueen, the punk-rock values of Vivienne Westwood or indeed, the timeless elegance of Marchesa’s evening-wear.

Last but not least, Scandinavian duo Aminaka Wilmont ended London Fashion Week on a high note for me. Simple sculptured shapes in soft browns and greys showed neutral colours against  stone landscape. Bold graphic prints in this show the duo called changeling were modern, fresh and elegant. I like this long dress, leggings combo. Great for my [...]
