Fabulous Florals Spring Summer 2012 Trend Alert

by Gabrielle on January 30, 2012

Florals have been a firm staple trend (so you’ve probably got plenty in your wardrobe) for the past few years and SS12 saw them receive yet another chic update. These aren’t the standard floral prints you’re used to seeing. This seasons florals have a real depth and artistry to them and the great thing is there is something to suit everyone. Opt for full on vintage romance like Valentino and Alberta Ferretti with dusty pinks, sheer panels and intricate embroidery.

Some florals  take a thoroughly modern approach with pop-art perennials (like Christopher Kane and Rodarte) and bold graphic prints (like Alexander Wang, Matthew Williamson and Mary Katrantzou).

Tips for wearing SS12 Florals: – Try to choose the vintage inspired  or graphic printed florals. – For one on-trend look try clashing florals with an aquatic print or stripes. – For another, try floral prints in soft pastel colours. Here’s a small edition of Florals currently available:

With London Fashion Week just around the corner – Will Autumn/Winter provide yet another incarnation of this mega-trend?

Jewel Tones : What to wear : Autumn Winter 2011

by Hayley Bevan on August 14, 2011

Sapphire at Christopher Kane

With the end of a fashion season almost upon us, we can only start mourning the loss of all those summer brights and neon’s that made our grey British mornings a bit more bearable. However there may be a ray of light yet, for Autumn Winter designers were focusing on a lush jewel palette “colour has become the new black” said Roland Mouret.

 Sapphire at Diane Von Fustenburg

The autumn winter collections are saturated with rich, powerful, and mesmerising jewel tones, which infuse us with happiness and liberate us. From Emeralds, to midnight Amethyst, Scarlet Ruby and Garnet, to opulent Topaz.

Chanel showing Emerald

Designers took inspiration from the jewellery box, bringing us an array of glamorous pieces, in sophisticated styles, and luxurious fabrics. This emerald silk-voile asymmetric dress is from Gucci and is undoubtedly one of the key pieces from the collection. With a nod to 70′s glamour, we suggest accentuating the deep colour with metallic accessories; this dress is in need of very high heels to carry of the dramatic thigh split.

Autumn Winter Trends 2011 :1940′s Fashion

by Gabrielle on August 1, 2011

I love 1940’s fashion. Recently commenting for The Guardian on Glamour of the Gods I noted how relevant it is to what we wear today. Here is Kate Moss on this months Vogue.co.uk looking so elegant and stylish in a beautiful 1940’s style dress from Miu Miu.

From Mark Jacobs we have witty pretty little suits perfectly matched ladylike gloves, collar, hat and hosiery and look at that stylish hand bag lovely.

At Gucci there is sublime sensual fox fur in gorgeous wine, to match a cerise dress topped with a wonderful mauve Homberg hat. The key to wearing this is in the details, colours are matched, gloves, hats, bags provide the essential extras and the whole adds up to elegant style.

John Galliano shows us the importance of tailoring. Here topped with a stylish French beret the silhouette is sculpted to show off the hourglass figure. Very feminine and very flattering.

Lanvin rocks and this season it does not disappoint check the hat, gloves and bag all in scale and perfectly proportioned coupled with a supple leather shift dress superb.

Some of us are ahead of the Fash Pack, here is me wearing vintage Christian Dior outside Christopher Kane in Sept 2010!!

Work It : Stylist Styles Spring Summer 2011

by Hayley Bevan on May 17, 2011

They were all over this year’s S/S runways, and they caught the attention of all the Stylists who were fabulously perched on the rows, they proceeded to follow us from show to show, from Sonia Rykiel to DKNY, the Sherbet coloured blazer kept appearing.

Add a pink silk blazer to your spring collection and wear it casually with tailored trousers, and skirts, in cool or camel tones for a polished take on the trend. Shown here by Balenciaga.

The blazer is an essential when it comes to yourworking wardrobe, and we agree that you can never have too many. You can choose from mannish, double breasted, or tailored pieces. A stylist’s top tip to achieving the look, is avoiding head-to-toe sweet tones, and to opt for layers. This is lovely from Carven.

Another one of our favourite trends for this season is the printed skirt, From Prada’s banana skirts

to the feminine laced embroidered flowers at Erdem, the catwalk was awash with pattern.

The bold prints might look daunting, but teaming them with neutral hues and simple separates, you can achieve a sophisticated and sexy look.

With all this in mind update your office look with our pick of the best ones.

Christopher Kane Stylist Reviews AW2011

by Hayley Bevan on March 3, 2011

Alexa Chung at Christopher Kane

If you wanted to experience the pure excitement of the Autumn Winter shows then there was only one place to be this year and that was Christopher Kane. Ideally you would have been sat on the front row somewhere between Alexa Chung and Yasmin Le Bon would have been sufficient for you to revel in the feeling of unexpectedness of attending London fashion week.

Christopher Kane

Kane’s “Liquid Collection” as he named it was all about wearable and sophisticated clothes, as with every Kane collection the designer communicated through the garments his childhood memories.

As the models streamed through, we all suddenly agreed that crochet is now definitely cool, the material was used on skirts and fitted cardigans in musky greens, browns, turquoise and grey, and it was boldly printed on leather skirts and tops, it peeked through plain collarless coats and jackets, making an original and unique Kane statement “keep the silhouette simple”.

Then came the plastic which we saw in the unusual trims that were inspired by those transparent liquid filled pencil cases of his school years, It encircled with its Blue, green and red liquid the pockets and the collars, it appeared in lines on the bodices the waist, and the edges of dresses, which on a few occasions became backless or exposed the midriff, there was a touch of gathered black netting here and there too.

The bags appeared in rectangular plastic clutch bags to match. With the soundtrack shifting to the sound of raindrops it was the time of sequin dresses with water drop-like appliques, in the same blue/green and red hue, shimmering past us with perfectly appointed Mary Janes.

It was another fantastic accomplishment for Kane who was the winner of this year’s BFC Vogue Fashion Fund, and it was evident by the overwhelming applause that emanated from the location of Camp Vogue at the show.

Jade Parfitt in one of Kane’s last season show stopping neon green ensembles had already picked out her favourites to wear to the show next year, well with the collection that was just shown I can guarantee it will be something, irrevocably cool, original and stylish, or should I say very very British.

London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011 Round-up

by Lauren Waine on October 18, 2010

While most of us were still hunting down the perfect aviator jacket or chunky knit for the Autumn/Winter season, more than 80 design houses showcased their Spring/Summer 2011 design offerings at Somerset House for London Fashion Week. In stark contrast to the muted minimalism of New York Fashion Week, London designers injected eccentricity and vibrancy into their collections, confirming London’s status as the most experimental and cutting edge of the global fashion week calendar.

In a bold juxtaposition to the fresh, white palette of New York Fashion Week, colour blocking returned to London with a number of modern, new twists. In a change of direction from simple panels of primary colours, designers such as Jonathan Saunders and Issa opted to use a neutral base colour such as nude or cream with which to contrast acid brights such as lime or yellow. Christopher Kane printed designs on clashing neon coloured separates whilst House of Holland and Roksanda Ilincic used a softer colour palette with pastel shades such as sky blue, silver grey and lilac. Designers such as Emilio de la Morena and Nicole Farhi offered more wearable options with small flashes of colour achieved through panelling.

From flared trousers and high-waisted shorts to pleating, fringing and feather details, like New York designers, London also embraced the 70s era. Giles, House of Holland and Topshop Unique showcased skinny bell-bottom flares for a relaxed Spring/Summer 2011 silhouette.  The designers differentiated their offerings with embroidered patchwork embellishment, prints, patterns and skyscraper platforms.

(L-R: Giles, House of Holland, Topshop Unique)

Other 70’s inspirations from pleating to fringing were apparent in the detailing of garments. Mark Fast introduced dark, heavy fringing on to his knitwear dresses whilst Henry Holland used long lengths of neon blue fringing asymmetrically placed on to dresses. Topshop Unique demonstrated the wearability of the trend by placing fringing on accessories such as shoes and bags. Pleats were another key trend, seen everywhere from skirts to sleeves, adding flirty movement and volume to garments. Richard Nichol combined accordion fan pleating with draping to produce elegant floor-length skirts whilst Hannah Marshall used boxy folds to embellish simple dresses.

(L-R: Mark Fast, Topshop Unique, Richard Nichol)

Biker chic is a fashion love affair continuing into the Spring/Summer 2011, the standout piece of the week being the Burberry Prorsum studded leather jacket.  The re-emergence of the biker jacket after a season dominated by the aviator, is a refreshing comeback. Channelling Hells Angels in a collection Christopher Bailey named ‘Heritage Biker’, the designer offered mini leather trenches, leather trousers and coats, all embellished with silver studs and spikes. Springs leather offerings come in a variety of finishes, from python print to patent and even quilted. Acne reinforced the leather trend with patent mini skirts whilst Marios Schwab showcased skin-tight leather trousers.

(L-R: Burberry Prorsum, Acne, Marios Schwab)

Designers placed huge emphasis on the embellishment of their garments adding copious amounts of statement finishing touches to their collections. Metallic yarn was used to add glamour to summer knitwear, giving a chainmail effect. Sass and Bide and Ashley Isham added intricate metallic beading and studded details to various items in their collections whilst Matthew Williamson trimmed tweed in raffia and added twisted knots to bustiers.

London Fashion Week was a showcase of exciting, innovative designs. The designers presented ambitious and adventurous collections, setting high standards for Paris and Milan to follow. London has always been regarded as the most experimental of the fashion weeks due to the emergence of new designers and the confidence and fearlessness of established ones.
