The Trend: The Maxi Coat

There is no escaping winter, here are the the best styles handpicked by stylists at Gabrielle Teare.

Remember the furore of last year’s Camel Coat? As always every season see the rise of a new star in the coat charts. From Celine’s long Chesterfield coat and Haider Ackermann’s theatrical floor grazing coat, it was clear at the shows that maxi coats were going to be big for AW11.

Here at Gabrielle Teare we wouldn’t be fabulous stylists if we didn’t give you some stylish advice on how to pull this trend, be aware that the most flattering shapes in this style are streamlined, and opt for a single breasted or dressing gown style. Pinstripe, grey flannel, and luxurious wool and cashmere, with clean minimal lines, are all set to make you stand out. Take a look at our stylist edits to ensure that you won’t be left out in the cold or from the style fronts this winter.

margiela coat

Margiela Coat

This wool-blend Merlot coloured coat from Maison Martin Margiela, has the fashion house’s characteristic twist. Wear with a draped blouse and straight leather trousers for a work to dinner look.

rodarte coat

The Rodarte girls did it again, for this season they infused their collection with a dramatic look, and this coat adds a touch of theatre to any outfit, channel the show styling and wear it with chiffon billowing skirts and flowing lines.

Roland Mouret

roland Mouret coat

Another favourite by Monsieur Mouret  here at Gabrielle Teare, this is immaculate tailoring at its best, this hopsack-wool coat is best when worn open to show off a stunning shift dress or belted up to chinch in the waist with a pair of straight leg trousers and patent stacks.

Missoni Coat

Missoni Coat

This Missoni coat is absolutely stunning, the Chartreuse and White wool-blend checked pattern was one of the key looks for the Missoni A/W
show, however this statement pattern is screaming for subtle and minimal tailoring to be worn underneath.

Rick Owens Coat

Rick Owens Coat

An asymmetric wool-blend coat from the master of cool Rick Owens, figure flattering, grey melange, uber cool, this one wins them all, wear with a cashmere sweater and remember to team grey tailoring with rich rusty browns leathers, knee highs or shoe boots, and a matching clutch with this will look  tres tres chic.

Chloe Coat

Chloe coat

An absolutely fabulous coat from Chloe, it is the perfect “effortless but oozing elegance” statement. The fabric flows beautifully and the gold clasp on the front is the ultimate waist cincher, wear with wide pant legs and fabulous platforms.

The White T shirt

by Hayley Bevan on June 29, 2011

The perfect white number by Stella McCartney.

So we all have one or two, it will be undoubtedly tucked away in the dark recesses of our wardrobe, as usually the limelight is selectively bestowed on the current seasons must have, or on sacred Vintage treasures. The white T-shirt has always been in its simplicity, regarded as one of the purest definitions of style, that is, if you know how and what to wear it with. In the past two seasons designers seduced us with that covetable Lux trend, this season a more modest garment emerged on the S/S runways, so much so that I have actually never seen so many Stylists, post-shows make their way to Harvey Nicholls to grab themselves the perfect white number by Stella McCartney.

On the other hand, I hear your thoughts, is it almost too basic? And you are right of course, it is hard to edit the look for fear under styling and looking rather boring, or to appear to be wearing the usual white t-shirt and trouser combo.

So here is how to inject a shot of uber-style in this white staple, we have pulled the hottest looks for you from this seasons collections.

Balmain

Rock it, as Balmain does tucked into leather shorts or a skirt it will make a stylish addition to your off-duty wardrobe, add sandals for a cool weekend look.

Chloe

Minimalist and pure, as Chloe shows us how to play the trend with figure hugging  clean lines perfectly tailored for a feminine finish, edit this look with lux accessories and bright-red lipstick.

Dior

This is a take on marine chic. Team it with printed shorts and add a statement satchel and cocktail ring to stay cool in the heat.

Jil Sander

This is the biggest trend of the summer, Colour block skirts, they  are everywhere. To make the white stand out choose a flashy coloured skirt long or short.

Max Mara

If opting for a total white look as seen at Max Mara, add a pop of colour with your belt, shoes, and sunglasses.

Hits of 2010 – What to buy in the sales……….

by Gabrielle on December 28, 2010

As the Leading London Personal Stylist I take people for Personal Shopping on a daily basis. This gives me a unique take on the clothes that worked the best for my clients in 2010. Here are the all star buys.  The Military Jacket from Balmain, Burberry (shown here) or from high street superstar Pinko. This is a trend that is easy to wear and will last for many seasons to come.

Next on my list is the shearling jacket. This is more “fashion” than the military jacket and will date but it is fun, warm and chic to wear. Shown here from Balmain, also Burberry my high street favourite is at Emporio Armani also in black with black shearling. Nice versions are at Acne, Joseph and Top Shop.

Top of my absolute faves this year is this stunning dress from Lanvin. Look for skirts from Carven featuring the ruffle or the full dress. My favourite, beautifully cut and in the stores now is this from Aqua for £135.

Aqua

For wonderful wearable shoes influenced by the madmen 50’s style look no further than Louis Vuitton, Roger Vivier or Prada.  These are Louis Vuitton Beauty pumps.

Louis Vuitton

Celine has investment buys. Look no further for drop dead style from Phoebe Philo.

Celine

Or buy a classic camel coat from Max Mara or Chloe. This is so elegant and beautiful and will last and last. Particularly suits spring colouring.

Chloe

For a great dress that will take you into Spring Summer try Gucci at net-a-porter sale..

Gucci

Taller ladies suit these amazing draped styles. Lanvin, Roland Mouret all have great ones now on sale. For high street versions my favourite is at Ted Baker.
