Mens Style Autumn Winter 2011

by Gabrielle on August 2, 2011

Mens Fashion

As a Personal Shopper I am constantly on the look out for great mens clothes. So what is in the shops right now? This is a superb navy shirt from Marc Jacobs that rocks in heavy cotton.

For this gorgeous August sunshine try a linen shirt with shorts. This faded red shirt from Hartford will look great with blue, white or beige shorts.

My favourite Mens Shorts are from Boggi Milano. These are also nice from Polo Ralph Lauren.

My favourite jeans at the moment are charcoal black from Acne, black jeans will always look smarter than blue if you are doing smart casual.

Lovely chinos can be found at Canali and also at Incotex who manufacturer for Ralph Lauren at a much cheaper price.

Mens Knitwear

From France is a gorgous sexy sweater from Maison Martin Margeila  I love the shawl collar.

I love Italian style this is a superb piece of Etro tailoring and looks amazing on.

Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe wearing Brigitte Bardot-style capri pants

Most of the stars in this wonderful exhibition of Hollywood portraits look just as stylish in 2011 as they did at the time. There are pictures of Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe wearing Brigitte Bardot-style capri pants: they could walk down the street in those today. And 1940s fashion, of which we see a lot in this show, is very in for autumn/winter this year. Look at the current edition of Vogue, and you’ll see Kate Moss on the cover, wearing a 1940s-style outfit and looking just as stunning as any of these stars.

One of my favourite looks comes in a portrait of the silent-movie actor Louise Brooks, from the 1920s. She has a shiny black helmet of hair, a black dress, and a long string of white pearls. Everything about that look works: the monochrome colours, the simplicity.

Then take someone like Marlene Dietrich: in one picture, we see her in a black suit, with her incredible high cheekbones. She did her own thing – she dressed like a man at a time when fashion was very prescriptive. That, for me, is the essence of style.

1940′s Fashion

The men look pretty good here, too. Cary Grant is smooth and gentlemanlike in a suit. Then there’s the famous portrait of Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire: the tight white T-shirt, the jeans. Wow – he looks just as sexy as he did at the time; you really wouldn’t say no.

Some of today’s fashion photography comes close to achieving the stylised glamour of these portraits, but when it comes to pictures of movie stars, we just don’t quite have anything like it any more. Everything – the lighting; the fashion; the makeup – is about creating an image imbued with glamour and mystique. Today, we tend to see our stars snapped in their Ugg boots on the way to the supermarket.

Menswear Accessories Spring Summer 2011

by Michael Mulligan on May 20, 2011

Menswear Accessories

Accessories can make or break an outfit – Every girl knows that. But what about men? In truth, they have it easy compared to the subtle politics and coordination of a handbag or a brooch.

My advice for mens accessories is to keep it simple, stick to colours you’re familiar with – Which for most men will be blacks, browns, blues and neutrals.

This set of accessories, in slick and shiny shades of black is an easy look can that can adapted for work or play. Perfect for business trips or the city.

Take inspiration from the country with soft brown leather, and simple check accessories. This look is great for travelling and patent leather loafers are particularly hot this season.

Stay fresh and casual by introducing a splash of colour into your outfit. It need not be as bright as these cobalt accessories, but don’t be afraid to incorporate some colour and have some fun.

Classic brogues in two shades does two things – It shows you have exceptional taste, and it gives you an extra colour to use when creating your outfit. This neutral set of accessories in degrees of brown and beige is perfect for a more leisurely, sporty look.

Menswear Spring Summer 2011: Gentleman Chic

by Michael Mulligan on April 5, 2011

:

Coreliani

Menswear can be tricky, do you experiment with the latest looks? Or do you it play it safe with the classics? This S/S 2011 you can do both. Take inspiration from the leisurely lifestyles of the 20th century elite with suits and coats in luxury fabrics and with clean, crisp cuts.

This look from Corneliani’s current Spring/Summer collection is a prime example of the menswear of the season, it would fit seamlessly into any year, especially 2011.

Joop

This suit from Joop‘s S/S 2011 Look-book epitomises how to keep a classic suit looking fresh – With accent colours and accessories.

Tom Ford SS2011

For the more experimental man, colour is key. Tom Ford’s S/S 2011 collection shows that a suit doesn’t always have to be dark or neutral. These 70′s inspired brights allow for a more fun, casual look.

Douglas Booth, arriving at Burberry Prorsum and David Beckham out in London show that classic styles with seasonal updates never fail.

Mens Style: Styling London Welsh Rugby Team

by Gabrielle on August 27, 2010

London Welsh

Sometimes it is such a hard life being a stylist surrounded by gorgeous men!

Here is me styling London Welsh at House of Fraser Richmond. They were so massive and had huge feet we had real problems trying to get clothes that fit!!

Three of them came with black eyes so I sent them to make-up, which they hated until ……..they saw the makeup artists at Lancome. Ha!!

Mens Style To Impress : What to Wear Now

by Gabrielle on August 19, 2010

I love styling men, there are so many fantastic clothes out there. Men should wear great colours that suit them, cool designs and expensive shoes. I like Etro for shirts, jackets and coats. This is a great easy coat to wear for Autumn days.

Leather is hot for this Autumn. Zegna make great suits for a classic fit, and this season check out the leather shearling jackets. Prada, D and G, Etro, Armani all have versions. This jacket and chunky polo neck will make you look broader, taller and is very sexy.

Lanvin rocks! Each season visit for cool jackets, fabulous suits and uber stylish ties.If you have not yet been to Savile Row this season is the time to go.

Cheap shoes will drive women away trust me. The number of conversations women have about tasteless shoes would be a revelation to men. Several of my friends have rejected advances purely because of shoes! Prada make fantastic trainers and loafers. Alexander McQueen does a privately ordered range at Harrods. Cheap shoes cheapen the whole outfit. Buy less and buy good. For work shoes Church’s and Prada make nice shoes that if you are typical of the men I know will last for 10 years or more. Cost per wear becomes negligible. Women’s shoes cost far more and last about 6 months!

Also at Prada this season is lovely wearable autumnal colours. Combine a blue shirt with a soft brown jumper and jacket for effortless style. The jumper in the shops is longer!

Cashmere jumpers are lovely, and there are great colours out there for men, Dunhill, Aquascutum, with their new design team, Armani and Ralph Lauren all make fantastic designs. They are seriously nice to wear and soft to the touch- cuddly. Try the ones styled with a collar like a long sleeve polo shirt. Also hitting the shops are ski jumpers this is seriously nice from D and G.

Mens styling for very tall men is harder, there are many men out there over 6’4”, it has taken me ages to source clothes for them. High and Mighty is a good source but the suit quality and selection for slim men is poor. I suggest their Ralph Lauren range and to go elsewhere for bespoke tailoring for suits and shirts. The Italian suit maker Sartoria is great and reasonably priced. Segun Adelaja has clothes to dream about. Very elegant and sophisticated, classic with a twist. Timothy Everest, does a range at Marks and Spencers.

Ties again should be expensive, forget  polyester, big spots or “funny”ties go for silk. Buy Hermes, Lanvin, Salvatore Ferragamo, to instantly upgrade your look under £100.
