You’d think that a husband’s top priority at Christmas would be finding the perfect present for his loving wife.

But he’s probably far too busy wondering about what Mum would like.

A survey has found that half of men put more effort into thinking of a present for their mother than for anyone else – including a wife or girlfriend.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, one in five admitted that they persuaded their partner buy their mother’s Christmas present.

Gabrielle Teare, a personal shopping consultant and advisor to the film Confessions of a Shopaholic, said: ‘It is like they want the meant-well factor but don’t want to put in the effort to go and get the present.

‘And if they do go shopping, it tends to be on Christmas Eve.’

The poll of 2,000 adults for TK Maxx found that Newcastle and Glasgow are home to the most mummy’s boys.

Almost 60 per cent of Geordie men said their mother’s gift was the most important, followed by 53 per cent of Glaswegian males.

The national average is 49 per cent. The report on Christmas shopping also confirmed that many of us are unhappy with the gifts we receive.

Eighteen per cent didn’t like anything they were given last year and 42 per cent have braced themselves for disappointment this year.

Fourteen per cent admitted they have politely assumed expressions of fake delight, so as not to give their real feelings away on opening a dud gift.
