London is known for iconic street fashion. International designers come here and scout for new ideas for their collections. Outside of the collections innovative shops emerge that create new trends and a whole way of dressing.

So how do I wear these gorgeous dresses? Add a leather jacket or the drapey long cardigan from All Saints. Doc Martins and leggings in winter, gladiator sandals in summer.

TOP 10 TIPS FOR INTERNET SHOPPING

by Gabrielle on May 17, 2009

The internet is massive now. It is so easy to get carried away, remember we only wear 20% of what we buy. This is an example above of fantastic fashion from Vivien Westwood at net-a-porter that you won’t find outside London/City Centres.

1. Only buy things you love.

2. Check out different sites often so that you don’t miss sale items when they come up. Very popular sites such as Cocosa sell out quickly make it a favourite and you won’t miss out. Key gabrielle to get invite.

3. Buy quality rather than “fashion” if you are on a budget clothes will last you longer and you will get more wear out of them

4. Buy things that fit you. Seriously, about 40% of my clients wear clothes too big for them

5. Buy colours that suit your skin rather than what is in fashion- orange is in right now but only 3% of population can wear it so tread carefully.

6. Spend money on items that are staples i.e. jackets, bags, coats, dresses and buy cheaper fashion items so you are on trend but uber stylish.

7. Fastest way to update your look is a new pair of shoes. Equally wearing shoes when the fashion has changed will date your whole outfit.

8. Use block colours to add drama i.e. black and white, black and red, brown and raspberry, yellow gold jackets or Mac.

9. If you are classic style keep colours to bags and shoes to stop your outfit looking boring lime green bags, red shoes etc. This is an easy way to make things fun and stylish.

10. Accessorise. The right necklace is literally worth its weight in gold don’t buy too cheaply aim to keep key pieces.

SUMMER WARDROBE STYLING

Rebalance your wardrobe for summer

Have you ever looked into your wardrobe in despair and uttered those much repeated words “ I’ve got nothing to wear”? The chances are that your wardrobe is bursting at the seam with clothes, so how could you possibly have nothing to wear? What you probably mean is that you have nothing suitable that you want to wear.

When it comes to having a great wardrobe, it is all about getting the balance right for you. If you do not wear clothes that are suitable for the occasion, then you will probably look uncomfortable and not feel completely confident. Many women have wardrobes full of beautiful clothes that are just not suited to their life style and so never get worn.

If you think carefully about your lifestyle and the different activities that make up your life, you spend the majority of your time doing just a few activities perhaps working, looking after children or if you are very lucky socialising. Outfits for these activities should form the basis of your wardrobe. Summer is a great time to have a good clear out and rebalance your wardrobe.

Why not get a personal stylist like Gabrielle to help you out?

If your wardrobe is full of elaborate party dresses that you haven’t had the opportunity to wear in over a year, perhaps it is time they moved out to make space for your every day clothes. If the thought of getting rid of your gorgeous party dresses breaks your heart, why not swap them or sell them. At least you can rest easy in the knowledge that someone else is loving them just as much as you did and perhaps even wearing them once in a while. With your new balanced wardrobe, you can also step out in style every single day and avoid that morning panic of having nothing to wear.

This article was written by guest editor Ceri Heathcote, Ceri provides online fashion marketing services through her company Heathcote Communications Limited and has just launched a website Posh-swaps.com for selling and swapping second hand and vintage clothes.

DIARY OF A PERSONAL STYLIST

Gabrielle Teare The Leading London Stylist -This Week.

What does a Personal Stylist actually do? I am asked this a lot so here are some highlights of this week so far.

Monday I met the Editorial team from WAR magazine. WAR magazine launched at London Fashion Week to the Fashion Press and Glitteratti. It is about to hit the shops and is the most amazing chic, creative style bible ever. With people on board like Lucy Stehlik who has been recruited as Editor from her freelance career at rafts of fashion and style titles and Morgan Luka, fashion editor, a young Parisian who’s moved from a career in couture modeling, to styling for YSL and more this magazine is a surefire winner.  We discussed a possible feature on personal shopping and personal stylists.

Tuesday I had a male client for Personal Shopping so I met him for lunch in a very elegant sophisticated casino called Les Ambassadeurs off Park Lane in Mayfair. The food is also superb.

He gave me a list of items that he was too busy to shop for. I then went off to shop for him. What sort of clients do I have? This is another question often asked, he is a very stylish man who works in the City. The Financial Centre has very few shops for smart casual, as it mainly caters for business attire.

Wednesday saw me doing a Colour and Style session, lunch, then Personal Shopping with a lady from New York. I lunch a lot! This lady has come to London for the first time. Attracted by arguably the best shopping in the world, the low pound, plus all the culture London has to offer. She went home delighted with a fabulous chic, elegant new wardrobe. I am based on the Kings Road, Chelsea where everybody shops, as it has some of the best shops London has to offer.

Friday morning I met with Kate at Film First where we discussed me providing an editorial and/or presenting for the DVD launch of Confessions of a Shopaholic. This film has been a monster hit and for those Fashionistas who have yet to see it I suggest you buy the DVD. This was followed by another Editorial meeting with Kerry Bannigan founder of  Nolcha.com where we discussed the follow up to our recent highly successful Dress The Band Competition for Fashion TV.

Then I met up with Jeremy Jackson Sytner who organises The Grand Tour. This is a fantastically fun car rally from Chelsea to Monte Carlo.
