REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES

As the Leading London Personal Stylist I have clients from all over the world,my clientele is mainly upmarket women. Are these women size zero? Absolutely not.

The most common body shape is hourglass and whatever their size my hourglass clients complain that fashion does not suit them. They are right.

I am a UK size 8 – US size 6, I have not bought a pair of trousers for 6 years, many of my clients are the same.  This is not a size thing but a shape thing. I have curves. Is fashion missing a trick? I refuse to wear hipster trousers. In fact, I refuse to wear anything that does not suit me.

If you have a waist, hipster trousers cut in at the wrong part of your body. However slim you are the result is a roll of flesh. Elegant? I think not.

Hipster skirts ride up and down as the hourglass has no defining flat area, so tops hang out and you are left with about 6 inches of spare material at the back, as the “too big” top will end up on the waist. This makes the skirt unflattering at best, and it looks like you are wearing someone else’s clothes, a much bigger someone. 2 sizes bigger in fact.

To overcome this fashion has designed lots of nifty tops that are either empire line, i.e. cut under the bosom or smock based, i.e. baggy. These were originally designed for preganat women. For the past two years my hourglass clients have all the same complaint. “I can’t wear trousers any more. Skirts no longer suit me, the tops don’t fit me and make me look pregnant.” Many like me refuse point blank to buy them and have very few clothes as a result. I am simply too style conscious to wear clothes that don’t suit or fit me.

I would like to reiterate that the majority of women have hourglass shapes.

So some style rules for the most desirable shape on the planet.

Wear fitted clothes.

Celebrate and exaggerate that great waist.

Refuse to buy hipster skirts and trousers look for high waisted styles.

Buy tops that are fitted and shaped to the waist.

Wear short fitted jackets.

Buy fitted shift dresses.

Choose pencil or slightly A line skirts.

Belt whenever you can.

Vivian Westwood, Roland Mouret, John Galliano, Dolce and Gabbana,

Karen Millen, Pinko, Tara Jamon,Thakoon, Victoria Beckham all make for the hourglass.

PERSONAL SHOPPING FOR MEN

by Gabrielle on April 1, 2009

This week as a Personal Shopper in London  saw me personal shopping for 3 men who were either too busy to shop for themselves or who wanted a new look. Each of them had different colouring, body shape, budget and lifestyle requirements. Most men understand the importance of buying a good well fitting suit but find smart casual more of a challenge.

Men should wear great colours that suit them, cool designs and expensive shoes. Brands I like are Etro shirts, lovely linen blazers, Dunhill has great shirts and coloured jumpers that are very good quality, Paul Smith does nice shirts, Cheeky Monkeys, Diesel, Lindeberg do great jeans. Right now Lindeberg has charcoal grey “Rock Star” skinny jeans that all my clients love. Coupled with a red V neck jumper and a fitted red/white Ted Baker shirt this is a great look.

Pringle has Merino wool V and round neck jumpers in fab colours such as turquoise, marine blue and dark red. Merino wool is cool for spring, summer and looks expensive and stylish. There is also a black and white striped French Marine jumper which will look great with black jeans and a simple T shirt.

Marco Bruschiani “I work in the City, and have very little time and so I ask Gabrielle to choose clothes for me. I tend to try and buy everything in one go in the same shop to save time and usually don’t like what I end up getting. Gabrielle has a great eye and always buys clothes I like that I would not have thought of buying. People always comment that they like what I am wearing so for me it is money well spent.”

Shoes are another statement item, a look will be ruined with a cheap pair of shoes. Selfridges have Oliver Sweeney shoes at 30% off and they look great with jeans in brown or suits in black.

Mens Styling for very tall men is harder, there are many men out there over 6’4”, it has taken me ages to source clothes for them. High and Mighty is a good source but the suit quality and selection for slim men is poor. I suggest their Ralph Lauren range and to go elsewhere for bespoke tailoring for suits. The Italian suit maker Sartoria is great and reasonably priced. Segun Adelaja has clothes to dream about. Very elegant and sophisticated, classic with a twist. Timothy Everest, does a range at Marks and Spencers.

Nigel Hall currently has some great shirts and jumpers although I would avoid the ones with flowery trims. Junk de Luxe is a cheaper brand with great jackets, Stone Island make great quality casual wear in easy to wear colours that will ensure the smart casual look is nailed for this summer. For swimwear try Olebar Brown fantastic in hot colours and black. See Below:-
